Responsible Travel

Serendipity needs
somewhere to happen.

Serendib — this island's oldest name, and the root of the word serendipity — gave the world its term for finding something wonderful you were never looking for.

Every journey we plan runs on that promise. A leopard crossing the track ahead of you. A conversation in a village kitchen that was never on the itinerary. None of it survives being used up — so the way we operate is built around leaving Sri Lanka able to surprise the next traveller, and the one after that.

In practice
  • 01

    No performing animals

No elephant-back rides, no captive photo stops. Not an upsell we decline — something we simply don't sell.

  • 02

    One jeep, one sighting

Our chauffeur-guides hold their distance at a sighting and don't call the park in to crowd it. You may see less. You will see it properly.

  • 03

    Refill, don't buy

Filtered water on board, so a fortnight on the island doesn't end in a crate of empty plastic bottles.

  • 04

Money that stays on the island

Village kitchens, family-run stays, guides who live where they guide — chosen whenever they are genuinely the better call, and we'll tell you when they are not.

Three things we ask of you

Ask before you photograph

A person's face is not a landmark.

Buy from whoever made it

Not from the shop that shipped it in.

Keep your distance

The best wildlife photograph is the one the animal never noticed.

You may visit Sri Lanka at any time of year. Because it is a tropical nation, anticipate sunshine and blue skies almost all year. Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, affecting opposite sides of the country. The northeast monsoon occurs from December to March (ideal for Southwest beaches). The southwest monsoon rains extend between June and October (ideal for Northeast beaches like Trincomalee).

Sri Lanka is a highly welcoming, secure, and peaceful destination. Standard tourist infrastructure is robust, and the local population is famous for hospitality. Tour companies like SerendiaTours provide safe, monitored transport, audited guides, and local hosts to ensure complete safety throughout the trip.

Yes, most travelers require a visa/ETA to enter Sri Lanka. You can easily apply for your Electronic Travel Authorization online via official channels (www.eta.gov.lk) prior to arrival. Your passport must also have at least six months of validity left beyond the end of your trip.

Lightweight, cotton clothing is ideal due to humidity. However, Nuwara Eliya and the central highlands get cold in evenings, so bring a light sweater/jacket. When visiting temples, you must cover shoulders and knees, and remove footwear and hats. Packing insect repellent, high SPF sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes is highly recommended.
